Why it deserves half a day

The Summer Palace combines imperial reception halls, Longevity Hill, the Long Corridor and the broad Kunming Lake landscape. It is not a single building, so the pleasure is moving between architecture, designed views and water. Four to five hours works for a selective first visit; a fuller hill-and-lake circuit takes longer. Choose your priorities before entering rather than trying to collect every courtyard.

Main admission versus the combined ticket

Main admission enters the park but does not cover every compound. The combined ticket bundles park admission with the four paid sites listed by the park: the Garden of Virtue and Harmony (Dehe Garden), Summer Palace Museum, Tower of Buddhist Incense and Suzhou Street. If you already have main admission, individual compound tickets are the alternative. Select based on the sites you will realistically reach before their earlier closing times.

Boats are another product, not a standard inclusion in park admission. Services are seasonal and can stop for strong wind, heavy rain or other adverse weather. Treat a cruise as an optional addition, not the only way to structure your visit.

Booking without a Chinese phone number

Reservation is not mandatory. You can optionally buy an e-ticket 1–7 days ahead through the official municipal-park channel, but first-time online identity binding requires a Chinese mainland mobile number. The park’s current guide also instructs online visitors to bring their passport for the selected date and time.

Without a Chinese number, go to the comprehensive service window in the gate area with a valid original identity document. Staff can place the order; the official municipal FAQ says the offline process does not require a phone number. It also lists CNY cash, BEIJING PASS and cards including Visa and Mastercard. No official daily online release time is stated.

Plan around two sets of hours

From April through October, the park opens at 06:00, stops entry at 19:00 and closes at 20:00. From November through March, it opens at 06:30, stops entry at 18:00 and closes at 19:00.

The four paid compounds open later and close earlier: 08:00–18:00 in peak season, with last entry at 17:30; and 08:30–17:00 in the off-season, with last entry at 16:30. They close on Mondays except statutory holidays, and several additional courtyards also have Monday closures. For a combined-ticket visit, arrive early enough to see the compounds before walking the outer park; do not use the park’s final closing time as the compounds’ deadline.

Choose a visitor gate and a fallback

Use a named tourist gate, not an office address. East Palace Gate (东宫门) suits the palace area and Longevity Hill and is associated with Xiyuan Station on Line 4. North Palace Gate (北宫门) is useful for Suzhou Street and the back of the hill and is served by Beigongmen Station on Line 4.

If online booking fails, use the service window. On a compound-closure Monday, either enjoy the outer landscape or change days. If boats suspend operation, continue on foot along the lake and Long Corridor. If your preferred ticket product is unavailable, ask about main admission plus individual compounds rather than assuming every category is sold out.
