Shanghai works best when big reservations and flexible street time alternate. Base yourself near a useful metro interchange rather than assuming every central sight is walkable. Browse Shanghai attractions to find museums, neighborhoods and day trips, then open a full guide to check how to visit.

Build a five-day route

The five-day Shanghai itinerary links People’s Square, Nanjing Road and the Bund, leaves full days for Disneyland or Zhujiajiao, and gives closure and weather alternatives. Use the booking planner to organize visit dates and available ticket release times, then follow the venue’s official link to check availability and book.

Public streets and interiors are different products. The Bund, Nanjing Road, Xintiandi, Wukang Road and Tianzifang do not have one venue-wide opening rule; museums, former residences, shops, cruises and events within or near them require separate checks. Shanghai Museum’s People’s Square and East buildings also have different closure days and entry procedures.

Arrival and local transport

  • Airports: Pudong is far east of the traditional center; Metro Line 2 and the Maglev–metro combination are the main rail options. The Maglev runs between Pudong Airport and Longyang Road, not directly to the Bund or People’s Square. Hongqiao is on the western side and integrates airport, rail and metro connections. Check your actual terminal and last service rather than using a generic airport transfer time.
  • Metro and ferries: The metro covers most central itineraries. Huangpu ferries can cross between Puxi and Pudong, but a commuter ferry is not the same product as a sightseeing cruise. Confirm the current pier, ticket method and operating notice.
  • Street distance: Central walking segments can be longer than they look on a map. Keep security, station exits and river crossings in the schedule; use official taxis or a verified ride-hailing setup for late or inaccessible connections.

Payment and overseas contactless cards

Set up an international-card-linked mobile payment method before arrival and keep a physical card plus a modest cash backup. Acceptance varies by merchant and transaction; “mobile payments are common” does not mean every foreign card or wallet will work everywhere.

Shanghai Metro’s Tap to Ride pilot covers the urban network. Eligible contactless UnionPay chip cards and international Visa, Mastercard, American Express and JCB cards can be tapped at the gate, subject to the official chip and online-transaction requirements. Enable small-amount password-free payment, maintain sufficient credit or balance, and tap the same card or device consistently at entry and exit. Not every card is compatible; if a gate rejects it, use the station service center or buy a ticket instead of repeatedly blocking the lane. Do not assume adding a card to a phone wallet produces the same eligibility as the physical card.

Distance and weather

Zhujiajiao is in Qingpu, roughly 40–50 km west of the traditional center depending on the start and route; treat it as a full day including return travel. Disneyland also needs a protected day in Pudong. Jinshan, Fengxian, Songjiang’s outer sights and Chongming involve still longer suburban journeys, often with a bus or taxi beyond the rail station. Do not schedule them as quick add-ons to central museums.

Summer heat and humidity call for shorter exposed walks and more indoor breaks. The plum-rain period usually falls around mid-June to early July, while peak typhoon risk is generally late August to mid-September; actual dates and impacts vary. Winter is damp and can feel colder than the thermometer suggests. Check a current forecast and official attraction notices for heavy rain, lightning, high wind or heat before riverfront, tower, water-town and theme-park days.
