Why visit and how long to allow
Tiananmen Square is worth visiting for its scale, monuments and place in modern China, but it is a controlled public space rather than a museum. A normal first visit takes 45–90 minutes. A flag ceremony needs the matching reservation slot and substantially more waiting time; do not treat it as a quick stop before another timed ticket.
Choose the appropriate free access route
For an ordinary standalone visit, the Square uses free real-name reservations. The Administration’s newer 2024 service notice says individuals and groups must book one to seven days ahead through the official reservation platform. Plan to book at least one day before. That notice does not state a daily release hour, so use the calendar and instructions displayed by the platform rather than a third-party timetable.
For overseas visitors, Beijing’s official 12345 guidance says the web portal does not support non-Chinese phone numbers. Use the “天安门广场预约参观” WeChat mini program, choose Personal Reservation, and enter each visitor’s passport details. If you cannot use WeChat, a trusted person can make the reservation for you.
Beijing’s official 12345 guidance also describes facilitated morning and afternoon Square access with a same-day reservation for the National Museum of China, Chairman Mao Memorial Hall or another designated venue. If your reservation meets that rule, an extra general Square reservation is not required. Verify the current designated-venue and time-slot conditions before relying on it; the exception is not a flag-ceremony booking. A Square reservation still does not provide admission to those venues or the Palace Museum.
Choose the right slot and gate
The reservation system distinguishes flag-raising, morning, afternoon and flag-lowering periods. Watching the flag-raising ceremony requires the dedicated flag-raising option, not simply an early general visit. Follow the date, slot and security entrance shown on your reservation; the nearest gate on a map may not be your assigned entrance.
Bring the passport or foreign residence permit used for booking and keep the reservation record accessible. If mobile verification fails, ask staff for document verification rather than abandoning the queue or borrowing another person’s booking.
Security and connections
Security is mandatory. Travel with as little baggage as possible. Dangerous and controlled items are prohibited, and the Administration specifically lists drones and lighters among items not to bring. There is no ordinary Monday museum closure, but national events and security controls can prevent access even with a reservation.
Leave a generous buffer before any museum slot. Walking routes and station exits can be redirected during busy periods, so follow current signs and staff rather than forcing a route from an old map. If continuing from the Square toward the Palace Museum, the official route from Tiananmen toward Wu Men is south-to-north only.
If the plan fails
- No reservation: choose another available day in the official system. Do not pay for a “guaranteed” free reservation or expect a same-day walk-in exception.
- Temporary control or closure: obey the diversion, leave by the directed route and rebook after checking an official update. A prior reservation does not override security controls.
- Phone or document failure: use the WeChat/proxy booking method above. At the site, ask a verification service point for help. The reservation hotline is 010-86409123, with Chinese-language assistance 08:00–17:30; press 6 for a person. If the passport details do not match, correct the booking for another day instead of attempting entry on someone else’s record.
Offline fallback card
- No reservation: book another available day through the official platform instead of expecting same-day or walk-in access.
- Temporary control or closure: follow staff instructions, leave the controlled route and select another date or slot after checking a new official notice.
- Phone or document failure: use the official WeChat mini program or ask a trusted person to book; at the gate, request staff verification and call 010-86409123 if needed.
