Why go, and how long to allow
This is Beijing’s broad national-collection museum and the best complement to the Palace Museum’s architecture. Prioritize the Ancient China galleries if this is your first visit. Three to four hours is realistic for a selective visit; the building is too large for a checklist of every hall.
Secure the free reservation
Basic admission is free, but every visitor needs real-name authentication and a reservation. Booking opens seven days before the visit at 17:00 Beijing time through the official reservation system. A June 2026 museum reply specifically directs foreign passport visitors to its English reservation portal.
Choose 09:00–11:00, 11:00–13:30 or 13:30–16:00. From June 1 through October 31, the final slot runs until 16:30. One account can book up to five people, but there are weekly and monthly frequency limits. A cancellation still counts toward those limits, so avoid speculative bookings.
Your National Museum reservation covers this museum and any explicitly included exhibition. The Palace Museum and Chairman Mao Memorial Hall have their own admission requirements. Beijing’s official 12345 guidance says an eligible same-day National Museum booking can also be used for morning or afternoon Tiananmen Square access; verify the conditions and do not treat it as a flag-ceremony slot. The reverse does not apply: a Square booking does not provide museum admission.
Basic admission versus special exhibitions
The free reservation covers the museum’s basic admission. Some temporary exhibitions are separately ticketed and publish their own conditions. Read the specific exhibition notice before paying: do not assume that a free basic reservation includes a paid exhibition, or that every exhibition ticket includes general museum entry. The booking description for that exhibition controls.
Arrival, documents and security
The museum normally opens 09:00–17:00, with last admission at 16:00. From June 1 through October 31 it stays open until 17:30, with last admission at 16:30. It closes on Mondays except statutory holidays.
Enter through the North Gate visitor entrance during your reserved slot. Bring the original passport or other ID used for booking plus the reservation-success message. The official rules say visitors without a reservation, with mismatched ID information or arriving after their slot cannot be admitted. For public transport, the museum’s October 2026 reply directs visitors to Metro Line 1, Tiananmen East Station, Exit D, then the North Gate.
Security screening is mandatory. Large luggage may require storage, so leave suitcases at your hotel. Do not bring food into galleries; flash, selfie sticks and support equipment are restricted, and power banks cannot be used inside exhibition halls.
If the plan fails
- No reservation: try another date or slot through the official system. Do not treat the Square or another venue’s booking as museum admission, and do not buy a supposed guaranteed reservation.
- Closed: move a Monday plan to Tuesday or another published opening day. Recheck official notices for holiday and special-event closures.
- Document or account failure: ask North Gate staff before your slot or call 010-65116400. The official visitor replies give service hours of 09:00–17:30 from June through October and 09:00–16:30 otherwise. If the original ID cannot be validated, rebook correctly. Cancellation is possible until 15:00 on the visit day, but it still counts toward reservation limits.
Offline fallback card
- No reservation: look for another date or slot only through official channels; the visitor rules do not promise walk-in admission.
- Closed: move the visit from Monday to another opening day and check official holiday or special-event notices before setting out.
- Document failure: ask North Gate staff before the reserved slot and call 010-65116400; a mismatch or missing original ID requires rebooking rather than assuming manual entry.
