The most useful boundary at the woodcarving expo city is between a museum collection and a commercial display. The official account of the Family Instructions Hall identifies a particularly strong museum subject: carved boards that once belonged in ancestral or domestic settings and carried advice about conduct, education and household life. Their value is therefore both material and textual. A finely cut panel is more informative when its words and original function are read alongside its carving technique.
