Why it is worth your time
Shanghai Museum is essential for Chinese art and archaeology, but a successful visit starts with geography. People’s Square and East are different buildings with different displays, entrances, closure days and admission procedures. Do not put “Shanghai Museum” into a map and assume the first result matches your reservation.
Choose East for the principal permanent displays identified in the current official People’s Square notice. People’s Square can be dominated by a long-running special exhibition, so check what will actually be open on your date rather than expecting the same collection at both sites.
People’s Square: check the current exhibition and entry arrangement
The People’s Square building is at 201 Renmin Avenue. Its official page says individual visitors may book in advance through the museum’s official WeChat mini program, and that overseas visitors can book through Trip.com. Present original valid identity documents at the South Gate individual visitor passage. Because current exhibition and session arrangements can change demand, confirm whether a reservation or ticket is required for your date instead of relying on an older free-entry summary.
The building normally closes on Mondays except national holidays. Entry can be restricted when capacity is reached. The official page also distinguishes venue access from exhibitions or programmes for certain priority channels, so verify exactly what your confirmation includes.
East: general entry and special reservations
East is at 1952 Century Avenue and normally closes on Tuesdays except national holidays. During the official no-reservation period, individuals present original valid identity documents, clear security at the B1 East Gate and scan their ID for entry. If the gate cannot read your document, ask for staffed assistance rather than assuming a copy is sufficient.
Curio-City and Digital Gallery still require separate special reservations. Ticketed special exhibitions have their own notices and purchase arrangements. General entry does not guarantee these spaces, and a special reservation should not be treated as transferable to People’s Square.
Route and timing
Reserve one building for a three-to-four-hour block. At East, prioritize the permanent galleries most important to you, then add a specially reserved gallery only at its confirmed time. At People’s Square, build the route around the exhibition actually showing. Both venues prohibit flash, selfie sticks and tripods; gallery-specific photography signs take precedence.
If the plan fails
A booking for one building is not admission to the other. If you arrive at the wrong site, check the intended venue’s availability and travel time rather than arguing at the gate. If East reaches capacity, return only when official flow control permits. If a special gallery is unavailable, the remaining open galleries can still make a substantial visit; do not buy an unofficial reservation.
Offline fallback card
- Wrong building: do not expect staff to honor the other venue's booking; check the correct venue's remaining availability before crossing town.
- People's Square unavailable: East may have different collections and rules, not an identical substitute; confirm East before traveling.
- East full or special galleries unavailable: visit available permanent galleries and skip the separately booked spaces.
