Why it is worth your time
The Bund makes Shanghai’s two riverbanks legible in one view: historic commercial buildings on the Puxi side and Lujiazui’s towers opposite. The essential experience is the promenade and streetscape, not admission to a building. Daylight helps with architectural detail; after dark emphasizes the skyline, but visibility still depends on weather.
Understand the access boundaries
No advance reservation is needed for an ordinary walk in the public waterfront area. That does not grant entry to a bank, hotel, museum, restaurant, observation space or cruise. Check that specific operator before adding one. Outdoor smoking controls apply at the Bund; observe marked areas and staff instructions.
Large holiday events may change entrances, direction of movement and nearby station access. Treat official barriers and announcements as controlling rather than following an old walking map through a closed crossing.
A practical route
Start around the former Customs House area, walk north along the promenade for the main Lujiazui views, then return on the street side to examine the historic façades. Finish toward Waibaidu Bridge if daylight and energy allow. A compact out-and-back takes about 90 minutes; a slower architectural walk needs longer.
For a wider first-day route, approach from Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street and leave time for the eastern walk to the river. A public ferry is transport, not the same product as a sightseeing cruise; confirm its current pier and payment arrangements locally.
If weather or crowds defeat the plan
Do not force a long exposed walk in lightning, strong wind or heavy rain. Move the promenade to another day and use an indoor venue whose reservation you already hold. If a station exit or waterfront entrance is temporarily controlled, ask staff for the open approach and keep the historic street grid as a shorter alternative.
Offline fallback card
- Heavy rain or strong wind: shorten the waterfront section and move to a separately confirmed indoor museum.
- Crowd controls: use an open side-street route and return later rather than crossing barriers.
