What makes the visit worthwhile

A provincial collection is the best counterweight to the palace: archaeology and art place the region within a much longer history.

A realistic route

Allow 3–4 hours as an editorial planning estimate, with extra time for travel, security and queues. Choose regional archaeology first, then one art section. Collections rotate, so select from the day’s actual gallery list rather than traveling solely for one famous painting.

Use this distinction when asking for help at the Hunnan museum. A general arrival is not a guarantee of a place in an education program or a particular temporary display. The neighboring Science and Technology Museum is an independent institution; its admission, films and activities must be checked separately before adding it to the day.
