Why combine them—and allow enough time

Gubei Water Town offers canals, courtyards and evening illumination below the much wilder ridge of Simatai Great Wall. The combination works because the experiences differ: a pedestrian resort visit and a mountain heritage site. It does not work as a quick half-day add-on from central Beijing. Use a full day for a daytime Wall visit; choose an overnight stay or a confirmed late return for the night session.

Separate the ticket components

Some products on the official list are labeled early-bird and require purchase at least one day ahead; they cannot be bought and used on the same day. Check the selected product’s condition before planning around a same-day purchase. This restriction does not establish a universal release timetable for other products.

A town-only ticket does not automatically include the Wall. A standalone Simatai ticket uses the listed check-in point outside the Visitor Service Center by the shuttle stop and does not include town admission. Day products may combine town and Wall, with no cableway, a one-way cableway or a round-trip cableway depending on the exact selection. Cableway-only products are not Wall admission.

The listed night combo is different again: it includes town admission, night Wall admission and round-trip cableway. Do not assume a daytime ticket remains valid for the night session, or that every night product has identical inclusions. Read the product name line by line.

Official ticket pages state same-day single use and require visitors in the same order to enter together. Standard combo pages also say lodging guests should not purchase them. If staying at a resort hotel, check in and ask which town, Wall and cableway benefits your particular package includes before buying anything separately.

Hours and gates are product-specific

The ticket list currently shows town opening from 09:00 to 22:30 Sunday–Thursday and to 23:00 Friday–Saturday, but last entry and combo-use cutoffs can be much earlier. The standalone daytime Wall ticket lists 09:00–17:00, last check-in at 15:00 and clearing at 16:30. Some town-entry day combos instead list Wall check-in until 16:10. Follow your product and designated gate, not a generic closing time.

For the listed night combo, May–October hours are 18:00–21:40. November–April sessions begin at 17:30, with different end times on Sunday–Thursday and Friday–Saturday. Reconfirm the exact seasonal session, last cableway check and clearing time before setting out.

Passport and hotel check-in

Official hotel terms accept valid passports and require valid ID from every guest, including children. Bring each guest’s passport to check-in. The ticket pages consulted do not clearly explain passport collection for every ticket product, so ask 010-81009999 before departure whether your order requires a paper ticket or a particular check-in counter.

Long-distance transport and the return problem

The official transport guide estimates about two hours by road from urban Beijing. Its Wangjingxi direct coach listing shows departures at 09:00 and 13:00, returns from Gubei at 12:00 and 17:00, and a roughly 120-minute journey. Services can change because of weather or temporary conditions; verify the current notice before leaving.

That 17:00 return does not fit a night Wall visit. Book lodging or arrange a lawful, confirmed late return instead of hoping to find transport after clearing. The official guide also lists rail via Gubeikou with limited connecting shuttles, but special weather can suspend connections; it is not a spontaneous guaranteed fallback.

If the Wall or cableway closes, ask whether a town-only visit remains possible and follow staff barriers. If you miss the coach, contact your hotel or the official hotline for onward-transport help rather than walking toward the highway or accepting an unverified ride.
