Why choose Mutianyu

Mutianyu combines a restored Ming Wall with a long ridge of watchtowers and several ways to adjust the physical effort. It is rewarding for first-time visitors who want to walk between towers without committing to an undeveloped section. Reserve four to five hours on site, plus substantial return travel time from Beijing; a full-day plan avoids rushing the last ride or transfer.

Understand the ticket stack

Great Wall admission does not include the shuttle, cable car, ropeway or toboggan. The shuttle service area is about three kilometres from the ticket checkpoint, so include that transfer in your schedule and decide whether to buy the shuttle product.

The cable car and the ropeway/toboggan are run by different companies, and their tickets are not interchangeable. A round-trip cable-car ticket requires returning by the same route. Cable-car purchasers must use the North Ticket Gate; ropeway or toboggan purchasers must use the Slide Ticket Gate. Check the route printed on your product before joining a queue. This separation lets you choose between an enclosed lift, the other operator’s ropeway/toboggan route, or walking, but it also means a wrong purchase cannot simply be swapped at another gate.

Reserve with the right document

Real-name reservation is required. The current Chinese rules allow bookings within 30 days; the older English instruction saying 15 days is outdated. No official daily release time is stated. Each passport, mainland ID or foreign permanent-resident ID is limited to one admission ticket per day, and every person needs a ticket.

Foreign visitors who booked with a passport can go to the designated checkpoint with the original passport; no paper-ticket exchange is needed. Keep the reservation QR code available. In exceptional cases involving a missing, damaged or unreadable document, the current rules allow QR verification or assistance with an entry credential at the ticket service center.

Daytime and nighttime are different plans

In the March 16–November 15 peak season, published opening is 07:30–18:00 on weekdays and 07:30–18:30 on weekends. In the November 16–March 15 off-season, it is 08:00–17:30. Ticket sales stop one hour before closing and ticket inspection stops 30 minutes before closing.

Day visiting covers Towers 1–20. Night visiting covers only Towers 10–15 and requires the relevant night product. Night schedules, performances and operations can change independently: a September 2026 official notice cancelled a performance while retaining the night visit. Check the notice for your exact date instead of assuming daytime admission, hours or rides remain valid.

Arrival and contingency planning

Navigate to the scenic entrance and shuttle station at Mutianyu Village, Huairou, not directly to a watchtower. Arrange your outbound and return transport before departure, confirm the pickup point, and use the official site’s transport page for current options.

Weather including thunderstorms, snow, fog or strong wind can close all or part of the scenic area. Check notices before setting out. If your date is unavailable, change it through the official channel; unredeemed tickets can be refunded or changed there before 24:00 on the visit day. Do not let a transport delay push you into an unlicensed car or a closed section of the Wall.

Offline fallback card

  • If the preferred date is unavailable, choose another date through the official reservation channel. Unredeemed tickets can be refunded or changed on that platform before 24:00 on the visit day under the current visitor rules.
  • Thunderstorms, rain, snow, hail, fog or strong wind can cause temporary full or partial closure. Check official notices before departure and do not attempt closed paths.
  • For a lost, damaged or unreadable document, show the reservation QR code at the gate or ask the ticket service center for an entry credential.
  • If your return transfer fails, contact the scenic area at +86-10-61626022 and use staff-directed licensed transport rather than an unofficial car.
