Make time for Cantonese morning tea, order a few dim sum dishes, and understand tea charges, portions and the bill.
Make the meal the activity
饮茶 or 早茶 is a good reason to linger over tea and small dishes. Guangzhou’s commerce bureau links the tradition with Cantonese dim sum and established tea restaurants such as Guangzhou Restaurant, Taotaoju and Lianxianglou. These names are starting points for comparing branches, rather than a claim that every branch has the same menu, prices or service hours.
Start with tea and a few dishes
Ask for the tea list and the dim sum menu before ordering. Useful names to recognize include 虾饺 (shrimp dumplings), 烧卖 (siu mai) and 肠粉 (rice-noodle rolls). Choose a small first round and ask how many pieces come in each basket or plate. A group can share; a solo diner can keep to a few dishes without ordering a banquet.
Read the units on the bill
Find out whether tea is charged per person and whether refills are included. Some menus group dishes into price categories, so match the selected item to the relevant category rather than assuming all baskets cost the same. Ask about service fees and a minimum spend if either appears on the menu. Keep the order slip until checkout and compare the charged dishes with those actually served.
Use a branch that fits your day
Choose the branch first, then check the map against your Xiguan plans. Yongqing Fang, the Cantonese Opera Art Museum and Chen Clan Ancestral Hall have their own visiting conditions. A restaurant reservation does not reserve museum entry, and a leisurely tea meal leaves less time for those visits. If the queue is longer than you want, choose another nearby restaurant after checking that dim sum is still being served.
Explain the order clearly
请问茶位费每人多少?这一笼有几个?我们先点这几样,不够再加。有没有服务费或最低消费?
Ask the tea charge per guest, pieces per basket, and any service charge or minimum spend. Confirm seafood, pork, egg and other ingredients for the actual dishes if relevant to you. English assistance is not established by a restaurant’s fame. Save the Chinese branch name and pay against the final itemized bill using the payment method that branch accepts.
See the Xiguan Yongqing Fang and Cantonese Opera Art Museum visitor guide for that separate place’s access and route, and compare the Guangzhou itinerary before deciding which visits to replace.
