Recognize the local figures
Save 惠山泥人, Huishan clay figures, and 中国泥人博物馆. Municipal accounts describe the museum’s 2025 renewal and the return of the Huishan clay-figure institute to 留耕草堂, Liugeng Caotang, in 2026. Displays include familiar 大阿福 figures and theatrical subjects alongside contemporary work. Compare facial expression, color and modeling rather than treating every figure as the same souvenir.
Choose a museum visit or an appointment
The city describes exhibition, retail and handwork spaces, but the availability of a particular teacher or project needs checking. Ask which location runs the activity and whether independent visitors can join. The museum, the institute’s newer space and Huishan’s garden attractions should not be treated as one interchangeable ticket or entrance.
Find out what you will actually make
A beginner session might involve modeling or painting a prepared shape; ask the provider which. Confirm the object, materials, lesson duration and how much help is given. Ask whether the work requires drying, firing, later painting or collection on another day. If you leave Wuxi that evening, choose a project only after the provider explains a workable handover and packing arrangement.
Plan to carry it safely
A small clay object can be fragile even when the activity feels finished. Ask how to support it in a bag and whether it can travel immediately. Packaging, later delivery and replacement after breakage need explicit terms. If you buy an artist’s finished work instead, ask for the maker and technique information and keep its receipt separate from the lesson fee.
Keep a Huishan-sized route
请问这是捏泥还是给素坯上色？个人可以参加吗？需要晾干或烧制吗？当天能取走吗？材料、指导和包装多少钱？
Ask about the task, finishing and total. Leave time for one short permitted Huishan walk; Jichang Garden requires its own access check. If no class is confirmed, enjoy the open displays and compare finished figures without assuming an unsupervised workbench is available. Do not add a separate Yixing ceramics excursion to the same afternoon.
