Why it is worth your time
The museum connects Guangzhou with the Nanyue kingdom through archaeology rather than reconstructed scenery. The Tomb Exhibition Area centers on the royal tomb and grave goods; the Palace Exhibition Area interprets the palace and garden archaeological site. Seeing both is worthwhile, but they are separate places, not two wings of one building.
Book the correct exhibition area
The official visitor page lists normal Tuesday–Sunday hours of 9:00–17:30, with ticket/issue and entry ending at 17:00; Monday is closed except national statutory holidays. Palace admission is free by reservation through the museum’s official WeChat channel. Mainland visitors use ID at the gate; Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and overseas visitors use the reservation QR code.
Tomb admission is listed at CNY10 full price and CNY5 for eligible half-price visitors. Online or window arrangements apply, and eligible free visitors still need the specified ticket procedure. The lower tomb chamber requires another reservation, not included in ordinary Tomb admission. Check live availability and do not infer a universal release window beyond what the official page states.
Addresses and route
The Tomb Exhibition Area is at 867 Jiefang North Road, near Yuexiu Park metro. The Palace Exhibition Area is at 316 Zhongshan Fourth Road; overseas visitors should follow the official east-gate entry and west-gate exit instructions. Do not arrive at one with the other’s booking.
Allow two to three hours per area. For one day, start at the Tomb in the morning, then travel to the Palace and Beijing Road; this is a full archaeology day. If time is short, select one area instead of rushing both.
If the plan fails
A lower-chamber sellout does not invalidate the rest of the Tomb visit. A Palace reservation cannot admit you to the Tomb, or vice versa. On Monday or during a closure, use Beijing Road or Yuexiu Park outdoors and rebook. For unresolved entry questions, the official numbers are 020-36182920 (Tomb) and 020-83896501 (Palace).
Offline fallback card
- One site unavailable: visit the other only with its own valid ticket or reservation; they are not interchangeable.
- Lower chamber full: retain the ordinary Tomb exhibitions and do not treat general admission as lower-chamber access.
- Monday closure: use an outdoor district and move either exhibition area to another opening day.
