Zicheng is best read as layered urban archaeology. The heritage agency separates the standing late-Qing rebuilt gate tower and later barracks from the much earlier remains below ground. Those excavated traces include walls, passageways and successive elements of the administrative axis. The value lies in understanding how government occupied and rebuilt the same urban ground, rather than imagining that the entire visible park is an untouched palace from one dynasty.
Walk the signed public circuit, inspect the exposed or interpreted remains and add permitted nearby old-city lanes.
Entry and component boundaries
Approach through the southern gate and use Qiao Tower as the first orientation point. A recent public visitor account then follows the central axis beside a long archaeological trench, where stone thresholds, brick paving and wall foundations belong to different periods. Keep to the protected viewing edge and compare the interpretation with what is physically exposed.
