The old moat links bridges, planted banks and museum precincts around central Nantong. A partial land circuit reveals more than trying to walk the entire ring without breaks.

The old city moat is a large ring, not a single small garden. The operator’s introduction describes its winding form around the old city, while the city’s scenic geography separates the north, southwest and southeast cultural clusters. For a first visit, the southern museum side or a selected bridge-and-bank section is more manageable than completing the whole ring. A land walk and Haohe Yehua, the night-light cruise experience, provide different readings of the city.

Build a route that ends at the right place

Choose the southern moat and museum side for a first visit, cross only at public bridges and finish near a clear pickup point.

Choose a start and finish based on one cluster: the Nantong Museum/Wenfeng side for collections and riverbank paths, or the north-side visitor center if a confirmed cruise is the priority. Photograph the actual operating pier name, establish whether the boat returns there and leave time for security and boarding. A 2025 municipal promotion named the visitor-center pier at 508 Haobei Road, but that dated promotional landing must be rechecked rather than assumed for every current route. The moat is not a through-ferry to all museums.

Plan 2–3 hours for the stated visitor focus. This is an editorial allowance; queues and a separately described county-city journey need their own buffer.

Admission evidence and product boundaries

Public banks, cruises, gardens and enclosed museums have separate admission; the 5A rating is not an all-inclusive ticket.

The operator portal, municipal night-cruise introduction and the specific 2025 pier promotion were checked. The night-cruise text describes light-and-water storytelling, but its scenes are not a current sailing timetable. The free 2025 sports-fan offer was limited by date and local identification and is not offered to October foreign visitors here. Current route, price, departure, weather cancellation and passport registration remain unknown. Ask for the precise night-cruise product, operating pier and return point; museum admission is independent.

A named alternative when the plan changes

If cruises stop, retain the chosen public-bank route only where safely open. Nantong Museum and the Blue Calico Museum are named cultural alternatives in different sections of the moat; each needs its own opening confirmation. If an embankment is closed, use signed public streets rather than following the water through a museum garden or maintenance area. In storms, move the moat and keep a confirmed indoor session instead of treating an exposed bridge as shelter.
