Founded by Zhang Jian in 1905, Nantong Museum combines a museum collection with historic garden buildings. The city institutional profile distinguishes the newer exhibition building from older spaces: it historically names local civilization and collection displays in the new building, and the museum’s own early history in the South Building. That is a useful interpretive contrast—regional objects versus the idea and architecture of the early museum—but an old list of ten displays must not be treated as today’s guaranteed gallery inventory.

Build a route that ends at the right place

Start with the open collection galleries, then walk the historic garden buildings. Pair with the southern Hao River, allowing each interior its own admission check.

Use 19 Haonan Road, the municipal museum-directory address, and confirm which public entrance and buildings are operating. Begin with the current permanent local-history collection if open, then walk the permitted historic garden route and choose an older building’s interpretation. Leave the exterior and planting their own time rather than seeing them only as a corridor between galleries. Pair with a short southern Hao River section after a rest. The north-side cruise center and the eastern Blue Calico Museum are different places around the moat, not one shared doorway.

Plan 2–3 hours for the stated visitor focus. This is an editorial allowance; queues and a separately described county-city journey need their own buffer.

Garden access, historic rooms, new exhibitions and educational programs may differ; renovation can restrict individual buildings.

If one building is closed, ask which other museum components remain open and whether the surviving visit still meets your interests.
