Before you book

Check the venue's latest notice for your visit date, including opening hours, available tickets and any document requirements. Use the official links below to confirm and book.

Why visit, and how long to allow

Yonghegong, often called the Lama Temple, rewards a visit because it is both an imperial-scale architectural complex and an active Tibetan Buddhist monastery. The experience is not just a sequence of photogenic gates: worshippers, incense and ritual give the halls their meaning. Allow 1.5–2.5 hours for an unhurried walk through the main axis, with extra time for reading and quiet observation.

Arrive at least 60–90 minutes before last admission if you need staff assistance or a paper ticket. Special religious dates can bring different crowd and opening arrangements, so check an official notice rather than assuming the normal schedule applies.

Reserve first, then use the correct passport workflow

Search WeChat for the official account 雍和宫游客信众服务. Choose the visit date, passport as the document type and the appropriate ticket category, then enter every visitor’s real details. A valid document can be used for only one ticket per day; one WeChat account can purchase up to three tickets daily.

For a full-price passport booking, use the entry QR code at the gate on the reserved date and carry the original passport used for the order. For a half-price passport booking, the official process is different: reserve first, then bring the reservation number and original passport to the Ticket Processing Center. After verification, purchase the paper ticket and proceed to the gate. Visitors who qualify for free admission do not reserve, but must show original qualifying documents for manual inspection.

The official pages do not publish one general release window or daily release hour. Use the live official booking calendar; this guide makes no claim about remaining tickets.

Hours, entry and transport

The listed hours for April 1–October 31 are 09:00–17:00, with ticket sales and entry stopping at 16:30. For November 1–March 31, hours are 09:00–16:30, with ticket sales and entry stopping at 16:00. Clearing follows at closing. Do not confuse the final entry cutoff with the time by which you must leave.

Use Yonghegong Lama Temple station on subway Lines 2 or 5 and follow current station and street signs. From central Beijing, allow roughly 30–45 minutes including the walk, plus ticket checks. This is a planning estimate, not a guaranteed journey time.

Religious-site etiquette

Official guidance prohibits photography and video recording inside halls, and incense burning inside halls is also prohibited. Do not smoke in the courtyards. Three incense sticks are recommended for worship; when wind conditions suspend burning, follow staff directions rather than trying to light them anyway.

Dress respectfully, lower your voice and never block someone praying for a photograph. Treat ritual objects and barriers as parts of a working religious site, not props.

If entry fails

If the date is full, change dates in the official account instead of buying from a tout. For a QR or document mismatch, go directly to the Ticket Processing Center; the official service numbers are 010-84191906 / 010-84191907. If last admission has passed or a closure is announced, rebook and take a low-stakes walk through the surrounding hutongs rather than waiting at a closed gate.

Offline fallback card

  • If your date cannot be reserved, select another date in the official WeChat account; do not rely on an unofficial reseller.
  • If a passport, reservation number or QR code cannot be processed, go to the Ticket Processing Center before joining the gate line, or call 010-84191906 or 010-84191907.
  • If wind suspends incense burning, continue without incense and follow staff instructions; if the temple announces a closure, move the visit to another date through the official channel.
  • If you arrive after last admission, do not wait for the clearing time; rebook and use a walk through the surrounding hutongs as the immediate alternative.
