Try on an outfit because you are curious about it, choose styling if that is part of the experience you want, or make time for a photo session. You can choose one of these without buying every extra offered.
Hanfu experiences are a form of cultural leisure and photography. Ask what style you are choosing and whether the design is historical, modern or inspired by screen costumes. A shop’s promotional language is not a substitute for an explanation, and a photo session is not a picture of how everyone in Xi’an dresses day to day.
Start with the experience, then compare packages
- Rental: check the outfit, size, included pieces, permitted use, return place and time.
- Rental with styling: ask what makeup and hair styling include, what you need to bring, and when your appointment actually starts.
- Photography: confirm the shooting time, locations, photographer, number and type of files, editing and delivery date.
For example, the linked package listing separates these kinds of choices. Use it to see what to compare, then read the terms of the exact option you select. The visible starting price or an unselected package does not establish your total or a place on your preferred date.
Confirm the total before paying
Ask the provider to identify everything you will pay for: rental and styling, photography and edited images, accessories, a deposit, late return, damage arrangements and any separately charged location. Clarify how and when the deposit is returned and what the cancellation terms say.
Ask whether you receive original files, edited images or both, how many, by what method and by which date. Save the selected package and written confirmation so you can refer to the same terms later.

I would like to compare rental, styling and photography. What does each include, and what are the total, deposit, late-return charge and return arrangements?
Check communication with the people providing the service
A translated website can help you buy, but you still need to understand outfit choices, the session and the return terms. Ask whether staff can communicate in English and whether that covers the photographer as well as the booking contact. If not, agree on another workable way to communicate before paying.
Use the passport and phone checklist for the actual booking channel. An app accepting an overseas number does not prove that a separate shop form will accept it.

Make room for the whole session
Choosing and fitting clothes, waiting, styling, photography and changing back all take space in the day. A one-hour photography component is not a promise that the entire visit takes one hour.
Choose a place you can realistically reach after your morning activity. The Xi’an itinerary includes a morning-only option to leave an afternoon clear; check the provider’s actual address before committing to that morning visit. Keep a food walk or dinner flexible afterwards.
Treat the location as a separate decision
If you want photographs at a particular attraction, confirm its current opening, the type of photography allowed and any entry or permission needed. A clothing package includes admission only when its terms explicitly say so. Read the city-wall and Beilin guide for that visit’s own arrangements.
In residential or religious spaces, ask before making people the subject of photographs and follow the site’s instructions. A hired photographer does not create access to a private courtyard or a closed interior.
If the arrangements do not work
Ask about a simpler rental, a different confirmed session or the provider’s stated cancellation process. If the terms or communication remain unclear, keep an ordinary neighborhood visit instead of paying for a session you cannot understand. The Muslim Quarter food-walk guide offers a separate option; it is not an automatic extra to a long photography afternoon.
