The visitor focus

Rockwork, ponds and planted courtyards make Qiyuan a concentrated classical-garden visit in Haiyan. Give framed views time rather than using it as a quick stop en route to the coast.

A specific route

Qiyuan is a compact Haiyan garden whose interest comes from the relationship between house, water and small garden scenes. The government’s dedicated visitor report names Sanle Hall, Dicui Pavilion, the Dachi Sea pond, Bieyou Dongtian and Tanying Pavilion. Use those names to construct a short loop rather than assuming every pavilion is an independent exhibition room. A first pass should establish where the domestic setting gives way to the planted garden, then compare a close waterside view with a view back across the pond.

Follow the principal water-and-rockery loop and select open historic rooms. Pair with Haiyan town rather than rushing back and forth to distant Wuzhen.

Entry and component boundaries

The garden also has a specific screen-and-literary association: it served as a location for the 1987 television adaptation of Dream of the Red Chamber. In summer 2026 the operator used that connection for an interactive visit, placing different characters at named garden points and ending the reward route at Tanying Pavilion. That account helps explain the geography, but its cast, games and redemption system belonged to a dated program. A visitor interested in garden design can still use the same spatial anchors without expecting an actor at each stop.

Garden entry, historic interiors, special exhibitions and surrounding public streets may have separate conditions.

If access or weather changes

Allow around ninety minutes for the core garden, with more time only for a confirmed exhibition or current performance. The official summer notice covered 15 July through 31 August, so its evening hours and weekend staffing are not imported as late-October rules. A broader Qiyuan scenic-area name may also reference neighboring cultural institutions; ask which actual building and ticket the order covers. If the garden visit fails, Nanbei Lake supplies a named Haiyan landscape alternative, requiring a separate transfer rather than an assumed connected walking route.

Allow 1.5–2 hours plus transfer for the stated focus; the route is an editorial planning estimate, with separate district/county transfers outside that allowance.
