Choose the city museum on the south bank

Nanning Museum explains the city itself, while Guangxi Museum and the Guangxi Museum of Nationalities cover broader regional themes. The city museum is at 15 Longdi Road, Liangqing District, beside the Yong River. Its visitor guide places it north of Wuxiang Avenue at Longdi Road and Songxiang Road, across the river from Qingxiu Mountain’s Longxiang Tower. A view across the river does not mean the mountain entrance is a short walk away: reserve a separate transfer and a substantial visit for Qingxiu Mountain.

A three-hour route through five permanent displays

Begin on floor two with Yongrong Huagui, the ancient-Nanning history display. Its five parts move from early river communities through Luoyue culture and later imperial history. Allow about an hour and use the chronological sequence to understand why the Yong River and the city’s position mattered.

Continue to floor three for A Century of Nanning, covering the modern city’s changes. The same floor houses the 1929 Nanning Uprising memorial display. Select the modern-history sequence or spend longer with the uprising material; trying to read every panel in both can easily occupy the rest of the visit.

Finish on floor one with one contrasting subject: Dadi Feige, the folk-song exhibition, or Hongtu Qingyun, Lu Quanzhi’s red-pottery art. These are named permanent displays on the museum’s current exhibition index, rather than a promise that every interactive device or event will operate. A temporary show is an optional final addition, not a reason to cut the city-history galleries to a few minutes.

Entry, closing day and passport uncertainty

The museum’s 16 December 2024 notice introduced free, reservation-free entry for individual visitors from the following day. Its current homepage still links that notice and states Tuesday–Sunday 09:00–17:00, last admission 16:30, with Monday closure and exceptions announced separately. Groups of 20 or more must report in advance by telephone. Capacity controls can temporarily stop entry; “no reservation” does not guarantee immediate admission on a crowded day.

The published notice does not spell out a foreign-passport security or registration procedure. Carry the original passport and ask the front desk at 0771-5445228 if document handling is important to your plan. No advance-release time is asserted because individual entry is not a released reservation product under this notice.

A useful change of plan

If the city museum is closed, move its indoor session to another opening day. Three Streets and Two Lanes is a separate old-city alternative with the Deng Yingchao Memorial nearby; the museum website publishes that branch’s own notices, so confirm it independently. In severe weather, keep only an indoor venue whose admission is confirmed. Nanhu Park is a lighter outdoor alternative on a different city route, not indoor shelter and not a walkable continuation of every south-bank museum visit.
