- Register on the official English service
Use 12306.cn/en and select a foreign passport as the document type. Enter your English name in passport order, copy the passport number and other fields from the document, and use an email address you can access.
- Complete identity verification
Follow the current 12306 prompts for automatic verification or online submission of your passport information-page photo. If online verification is pending, failed or unavailable, take the original passport to a station ticket window; no fixed review-time promise applies.
- Book the exact train and passenger
After verification, check the departure and arrival stations, date, train number and passenger passport details. Use the sales-opening information currently shown by 12306 rather than assuming an old advance-sale window or station opening time.
- Pay through an offered method
Choose a payment method actually shown at checkout and complete it within the displayed time. Official 2026 guidance lists domestic and overseas bank cards and mobile payment apps online, but a bank or payment provider can still decline a transaction.
- Board with the original passport
Bring the same original passport used for the booking. Use an automatic gate if it supports the document or a staffed channel otherwise. An itinerary sheet or reimbursement receipt is not a ticket and does not replace the passport.
Troubleshooting
Match your symptom
Your passport profile is not verified or verification has failed.
- Compare the English name order, passport number, nationality, date of birth and expiry date with the passport information page.
- Follow the 12306 option to submit a clear passport information-page photo for manual verification, if offered.
- If the status remains unresolved, take the original passport to a station ticket window and ask for identity verification before trying to buy.
我的外国护照身份核验还没有通过。请问可以在线上传护照信息页,还是需要到车站窗口办理?
Fallback: Use the station ticket window with your original passport. Station staff can verify identity and sell an available ticket, but this does not guarantee a seat on a sold-out train.
Your international card or mobile payment is declined at checkout.
- Check the payment methods and payment deadline displayed for the order.
- Check with your bank or payment provider if it has declined or requires verification; do not assume routing the same card through another app will succeed.
- Try another method actually offered by 12306, if you have one.
我的国际银行卡支付失败了。请问还可以使用哪些支付方式?
Fallback: If the order cannot be paid in time, check availability again and use a station ticket window. Ask the cashier which bank cards, mobile payment apps or RMB cash options are accepted there.
The gate does not read your passport or you only have an itinerary sheet.
- Take the original passport used for the booking and go to the staffed ticket-checking channel.
- Show the train number, date and order information so staff can locate the booking if needed.
我使用护照购票,自动闸机无法读取。请问人工检票通道在哪里?
Fallback: Ask station staff or call China Railway customer service on 12306 before the train departs. Do not treat a printed itinerary as permission to board.
Plan the whole journey, from your accommodation to the station and from the arrival station to the place you actually want to visit. Use station and timing checks, the booking steps above, boarding advice and the symptom checks if something goes wrong.
Choose the station before choosing the departure
Read the full departure and arrival names, including East, South, North or West where present, and save the Chinese names. A city’s different stations are not interchangeable. Check the actual station on the selected train and the journey between it and your accommodation.
Allow time for the trip to the station, security, document checks, finding the departure area and the onward connection. The train’s advertised running time is only one part of the day. For a return outing, confirm the return journey and the last leg back to your base before committing to the outward plan.
For a Chengdu outing, read the Dujiangyan and Qingcheng guide and choose which component you actually want to visit. Check the departure station, arrival station and final transfer for that component; a shared scenic-area name does not create one station or one ticket for both.
At the station and on the train
Keep the original document used for booking and the train details available. Follow the station’s security and boarding instructions. If the gate cannot read your passport, use the staffed channel and allow time for assistance; an itinerary sheet cannot replace the accepted document.
Find the coach and seat shown on your booking, keep luggage clear of passages and follow onboard instructions. Check the services on your chosen train before relying on a particular meal or other facility. Leave time to collect your belongings and identify your arrival stop.
After arrival, use the correct exit and onward route for your actual destination. Keep a meal or a short neighborhood walk flexible; avoid planning several distant attractions merely because a train journey looks short. The local experiences and Chengdu itinerary choices offer slower alternatives to compare.
Know the rules
- The official English 12306 site accepts valid foreign passports for registration and provides ticket purchase, changes and refunds. Real-name ticketing ties the passenger, ticket and document together.
- Enter the passport’s English name in document order. The 2026 official guide describes automatic online verification, online manual review using a passport information-page photo, and in-person verification at a station window. It does not promise a fixed completion time.
- An e-ticket does not require a paper ticket, but you must retain and present the valid document used for purchase. An itinerary sheet and a reimbursement receipt are not tickets.
Register, verify and travel
- Create the account. Use the official English 12306 registration page, choose foreign passport and copy every field carefully. Keep access to the email address you register.
- Finish verification before the day you must book. Follow the online prompts. If manual document upload is offered, submit the passport information page; otherwise or if it remains unresolved, use a station ticket window with the original passport.
- Check the booking details. Confirm both station names, the train number, departure date and passenger document. Sales availability and release information change, so use what 12306 currently displays rather than a copied advance-sale rule.
- Pay within the displayed deadline. The 2026 guide lists domestic and overseas cards and mobile payment apps for online purchases. The methods shown for your order and your issuer’s approval determine whether payment completes; Alipay is not a guaranteed workaround for a declined card.
- Take the original passport to the station. Allow time for security and document checks. Use an automatic gate if it reads your passport, or ask for the staffed channel. Keep the booking’s train number and order details available offline.
Ask for help in Chinese
- Verification: 我的外国护照身份核验还没有通过。请问可以在线上传护照信息页,还是需要到车站窗口办理?
- Payment: 我的国际银行卡支付失败了。请问还可以使用哪些支付方式?
- At the gate: 我使用护照购票,自动闸机无法读取。请问人工检票通道在哪里?
Use the station as the fallback
A station ticket window is the official fallback for unresolved passport verification, in-person purchase and payment questions. Bring the original passport and ask which payment methods that window accepts. For booking or document problems, you can also call 12306. None of these routes guarantees availability on a particular train, so check alternative departures if your first choice is full.
